Listening to music is one of the best ways to develop your ear, and is one of the most important things you can do to succeed in your music lessons. Most teachers say “practice, practice, practice” will get you to Carnegie Hall, and while we agree that practice is important, we also encourage all of our students to listen to as much music as possible.
While recorded music is a great resource, going to hear live music can be an even more rewarding, inspiring experience. Here are some places in San Diego where you can hear some great live music!
San Diego Symphony Young People’s Concerts
The San Diego Symphony presents several concerts each year specifically designed for younger audiences. If you’re trying to decide on an instrument for your lessons, these concerts can be a great way to learn about the instruments of the orchestra and see them in action. Tickets are only $5 and a free ticket is given to a chaperon who brings at least 10 students.
Dizzy’s Jazz
If you’re interested in jazz, Dizzy’s is great family-friendly jazz venue without the typical bar scene distractions. You’ll get an up-close experience of instruments like the saxophone, trumpet, piano, guitar, double bass and drums. Tickets are purchased at the door and are typically around $15 (or $10 for students/kids).
Sunday Organ Concerts at the Spreckels Pavilion, Balboa Park
Hear the world’s second largest outdoor musical instrument in action every Sunday at 2pm for free in San Diego’s Balboa Park at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. This is a great opportunity to learn about and experience one of the world’s most magnificent musical instruments.
