Adult Piano Lessons

Congratulations on deciding to pursue your dream of learning piano!  We are excited to meet you soon and help you achieve that goal.

Our large community of adult piano students is made up of:

  • Adults who played piano as a child, and are ready to give it another try.
  • Adults who want to learn to play piano while their children are taking lessons.
  • Working professionals who enjoy learning piano as a break from the hectic day-to-day.
  • Retirees who have always wanted to learn piano, and now have the time to pursue their dream.
  • Anyone with a love for music, who wants to experience the joy of creating music themselves

Here is what a couple of our successful adult piano students have to say!

Steven is an excellent instructor and makes learning piano easy.  I’ve been taking lessons with him for the past year and a half and come from a guitar background.  With him I’ve been able to learn how to read music and connect the dots between what I already know and what there is to learn.  So far I’ve gone from not knowing where middle C is to being able to play one of Chopin’s Mazurkas and a few preludes!

Steven answers not only questions about technique and practice but also about music theory and why certain compositions are written like they are.  As an adult student who wishes to continue his music education I highly recommend him!

Steven was such an awesome teacher! He was really understanding of my pace and busy schedule. I felt very comfortable learning and messing up and that’s important when studying any instrument.  I would recommend his studio to anyone, any age!

What makes our approach to teaching adults different?

Most piano teachers have a couple of adult students here and there, and the truth is, they really don’t know what to do with them. Why? Because they don’t have the experience to understand just how different it is to teach adults than children.

Here, 25% of our weekly teaching load are adult students.

Which means that we understand:

  • Adult students have different musical goals than children learning piano.
  • Adult students want to understand the theory and how music is made.
  • Adult students are often hesitant to learn because they feel like they can’t do it, or it’s too late:
    • But, we know that adult students CAN absolutely learn piano, it just takes the right approach and a teacher who knows how to:
      • Choose the right materials for your success
      • Introduce introductory material without it feeling childish
      • Communicate key concepts effectively so you will truly understand the music
      • Teach you how to practice effectively at home (a skill in itself that is often neglected in lessons)

Also, we know that adult students get MUCH more nervous when performing in recitals than children, which usually means that many choose not to perform at all, or they are the only adult in a recital full of children.

That’s why we have our informal Adult Recital Happy Hours, where our adult students can come together in a fun, casual atmosphere, and perform for each other without the pressure of a traditional recital.

Plus, we are located in the heart of Rancho Bernardo, right above Barons Market. You can pursue your dream of learning piano, and get your shopping done in the same trip.
